Objectives:
Course Objectives – Sim A.R.T. Introduction to Airway Management
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize patients who require basic and advanced airway management and identify indications for escalation of airway support.

- Demonstrate appropriate use of extraglottic airway devices, including device selection, insertion, confirmation of placement, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrate the key steps of direct and/or video laryngoscopy, including patient positioning, laryngoscope handling, airway visualization, and optimization of the view.
- Describe the principles of rapid sequence intubation (RSI), including patient preparation, preoxygenation, medication selection, equipment preparation, and strategies for managing a difficult or failed airway.
- Apply a systematic approach to airway preparation and management using an airway checklist to promote team communication, equipment readiness, and patient safety.
- Recognize common airway management challenges and complications and describe initial strategies to optimize ventilation and oxygenation.
- Demonstrate effective teamwork and communication during airway management, including clear role assignment, closed-loop communication, and anticipation of potential airway difficulties.
