Event Description

Ultrasound Broken Hearts is a hands-on educational course designed to introduce emergency physicians and acute care clinicians to the fundamentals of focused echocardiography and its role as a crucial tool in shock resuscitation.

Participants will develop practical skills through hands-on scanning of live models, image interpretation, and integration practice using simulators. The course will focus on obtaining core focused echocardiography views, identifying relevant cardiac anatomy and function, and integrating ultrasound findings into the clinical management of patients presenting with undifferentiated shock.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Perform core focused echocardiography (echo) views used in acute care settings.
  • Integrate focused echocardiography views into the clinical management of patients presenting with undifferentiated shock.
  • Demonstrate appropriate probe guidance and identify relevant cardiac anatomy and function using ultrasound.
  • Perform gross valvular assessment.
  • Identify focused echocardiography findings of tamponade physiology.
  • Recognize the limitations of focused echocardiography and identify when comprehensive echocardiography is necessary.

Course Format

This course provides a practical, hands-on learning experience that includes:

  • Hands-on scanning of live models.
  • Image interpretation.
  • Integration practice using simulators.
  • Practical application of focused echocardiography in shock resuscitation.

Pre-Course Preparation

Pre-course content will be provided to participants upon registration.

Participants are encouraged to review the provided materials prior to attending the course to prepare for the hands-on learning activities.

Course Disclaimer

This course will involve the use of live models and simulators to practise cardiac ultrasound views.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations more than 6 weeks from the course date will receive a FULL refund, minus a $150 administration fee. Cancellations within 4-6 weeks of the course will receive a 50% refund, minus a $150 administration fee. No refunds for cancellations received withing 4 weeks of the course date. If the registrant/resident (or program) is able to find a replacement to take the course in the place of the registrant who cancelled, the registration fee can be transferred to the new participant.

The responsibility to find a replacement lies solely with the resident or program. The Department of Emergency Medicine reserves the right to cancel any course up to the week prior to the course date. Registrants will be notified by email. A full refund will be issued for any cancelled course. The Department of Emergency Medicine is not responsible for any costs, including but not limited to, airline or hotel fees or penalties.

Costs of transaction refund will be additional.
