DEM Palliative PoCUS Course

April 23, 2020

Location: CLSF-000 Brodie Center

8:00 am to 5:00pm

Have you ever avoided a procedure such as paracentesis or thoracentesis due to concerns about landmarking the incorrect spot and causing an iatrogenic complication? You are not alone, and we have just the tool you need to be able to perform these procedures with precision and confidence.

Bedside ultrasound has revolutionized the way that many practitioners landmark insertion sites for these procedures, and is now becoming the standard of care. Our CPoCUS (Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society) certified instructors will show you a consistent and methodical approach to diagnosing ascites, pericardial, and pleural effusions. In addition, you will learn an approach to using ultrasound to locate the largest and safest pocket of fluid in the peritoneal and pleural cavities for landmarking drainage. You will no longer have to worry about damaging the bowel, liver, or spleen during paracentesis, nor be concerned that your needle will puncture lung tissue, sub diaphragmatic organs, or tumours during a thoracentesis.

Using a combination of pre-reading and videos, short lecture format, and lots of hands-on learning, the Palliative PoCUS course offered by the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Manitoba will provide the learner with a solid foundation to help your patients. Many of our ultrasound models are patients whom we have recruited due to the presence of pathology, so you will be able to generate images of ascites, pleural and pericardial effusions to prepare you for your next patient encounter. Register today!

Prerequisite:

The prerequisite for this Palliative course will be the successful completion of the online EDE course. This will be arranged by the DEM 1 month prior to the U of M Palliative PoCUS course.

As this Palliative course requires applications from both EDE 1 (by Dr. Ray Wiss) & EDE 2 (Dr. Steve Socransky), the DEM will facilitate your registration for both EDE online courses, which are two separate platforms. However, the cost of the prerequisite EDE courses has been factored into your overall course registration in order to help simplify your single payment.

Cost & Registration:

Cost will be $2100 ($1650 for Palliative PoCUS course + $450 for Prerequisite EDE course)

Cancellation Policy

The course is very resource intensive, with much effort being provided by the Department of Emergency Medicine.  There are a limited number of spots for each course, and it can be difficult to find participants to fill spots that open up due to cancellation.  In light of this, cancellations greater than 8 weeks from the course date will receive a FULL refund, minus $200 administration fee.  Cancellations with 6-8 weeks of the course date will receive a 50% refund, and there are no refunds for cancellations less than 6 weeks from the course date. Participants who have registered may transfer their registration to another person, but this responsibility lies with the original participant.  We will try to help find a replacement, but in the event one cannot be found, participants WILL NOT receive a refund (if within 6 weeks of the course).  Please contact Renee Nadeau at 204-272-3066 or renee.nadeau@umanitoba.ca for any cancellation and transfer requests.
