Course Description
This course is for physicians who want to learn, practice, and improve the skills and knowledge required
for safe and effective airway management in an emergency setting. Designed by emergency physicians,
for emergency physicians, this course blends simulation and hands-on practice to allow you to integrate
skill acquisition with clinical decision making. Skills include: bag-mask ventilation, laryngoscopy and
intubation, airway adjuncts, video laryngoscopy, and surgical airway. Principles of airway management
covered include: approach to airway management, airway pharmacology, airway anatomy and crisis
resource management.
Objectives
SimAIRWAY: Foundations of Airway Management Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Discuss how a provider makes the decision to intubate.
2. Define “difficult airway” and “failed airway”.
3. List the predictors of:
a) difficult bag-mask ventilation
b) difficult laryngoscopy
c) difficult extra-glottic device
d) difficult cricothyrotomy
4. Apply airway algorithms for RSI, Crash, Difficult and Failed Airways.
5. Compare the use of oxygen delivery systems in airway management.
6. Identify relevant airway anatomy on a manikin.
7. Demonstrate proper technique in the use of the following equipment on an airway trainer:
a) NPA and OPA
b) direct laryngoscopy & intubation
c) video laryngoscopy & intubation
d) gum elastic bougie
e) LMA
8. Compare pharmacologic agents used in RSI.
9. Demonstrate appropriate technique for two different approaches to cricothyrotomy on a trainer.
10. Perform appropriate airway management as part of a team, in simulated cases.
11. Demonstrate teamwork and the application of CRM principles in a simulated setting.
Course Format:
The course has a 1:4 instructor to participant ratio, and uses hands-on practice sessions,
simulation cases, and “take-home message” summaries to allow participants to gain comfort with the
fundamentals of emergency airway management. A manual is included with the course, and some
(minimal) pre-reading is required.
