A systematic and consistent approach is essential for the effective assessment and resuscitation of a traumatized patient. ATLS® uses the “ABCDE” approach to define an orderly progression of evaluation and intervention.

The instructor course is specifically designed to optimally prepare the future instructor to conduct ATLS training. The objectives of the course are to ensure that future instructors:

• Understand the roles of the course director, course coordinator, and faculty in a student course.
• Understand and apply key adult education concepts.
• Be aware of how the ATLS course design uses adult education concepts.
• Incorporate contemporary adult education principles to facilitate learning in interactive, scenario-based discussions, skill stations, and initial assessment practice sessions.
• Understand the importance of constructive feedback to optimize learning and apply principles to provide this feedback.
• Understand the principles of adequate assessment and the role of an instructor when testing a student’s performance.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the mission of the ATLS instructor course.
  • Describe the concepts taught in the instructor course and what participants will learn.
  • Recognize specific requirements for successful instructor course completion.

To qualify for instructor candidate status, participants need to:

  • Attend the entire course.
  • Actively participate.
  • Willingly apply adult education principles.
  • Support fellow participants.
  • Show professionalism, including being punctual and prepared for the course.

Successful completion of the course requires full attendance, passing grades in the skill stations and IA station and a post course test mark of 75% or higher. A verification card indicating successful completion of the course will be issued. In summary, you will be required to:

  • Demonstrate facilitation of an interactive discussion (including environment, set, dialogue and closure).
  • Demonstrate scenario-based practice of an ATLS skill using the 5-step model.
  • Conduct an Initial Assessment station (practice) as the facilitator.
  • Demonstrate the course affect consistent with the ATLS facilitator mission statement.
